Arts for Global Development, Inc. [Art4Development.Net] is an international non-profit voluntary initiative with a purpose of furthering interdisciplinary, multisectoral, cross-cultural and creative approach in social change, and facilitating creative sector and stakeholders of development together empower socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and communities worldwide, particularly children, youth, and women.

All donated artworks of the TreasurePostcards'08 Projects are for sale to raise funds for charity. Check out the catalogue for details of over 100 artworks and their creators. If you decide to purchase any one or two of the postcard-artworks please email tpp@art4development.net. 50% of the sales proceeds of all donated works will be given to Calvary Women's Services and 50% to Mor Cati (Purple Roof) Foundation between March 20-May 20, 2008. Between May 20 - November 31, 2008 all proceeds have benefited the Brighter Tomorrow for Africa Foundation that works to help women, girls, and children in Sierra Leone. Since December 01, 2008 Friends of Orphans has been the beneficiary.

Calvary Women's Services is a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, USA that provides housing and support services to homeless women. Calvary's mission is two-fold: To provide homeless women with a place to live and basic services and to help educate and empower women for independent living. Mor Cati (The Purple Roof) Foundation, based in Istanbul, Turkey aims to address issues around domestic violence and help women who have become victims of such cruelty. Through its shelters, helpline services, socio-psychological healing and counseling workshops, press campaigns, local/national awareness and educational programs, Mor Cati has been supporting hundreds of women and children since 1990 who have witnessed abuse and assault. To learn more about the foundation and its programs please click here (website in Turkish). . 9th Street Gallery in the Historic Shaw District of Washington DC aims to create an artistic and intellectual environment in which to showcase local and international artists.

The Benefit Concert organized by Arts for Global Development, Inc. in collaboration with the American-Turkish Association of Washington DC (ATA-DC) was part of our"Celebrating Women" activity that focused on women's issues and aimed to raise funds for two shelters (one based here in Washington DC- the Calvary Women's Services in the historic Shaw district and the other one, Mor Cati Women's Shelter in Istanbul, Turkey). In conjunction with this concert we recently had an arts exhibit - TreasurePostcards'08 - at the 9th Street Gallery that brought artworks of over 80 female artists from around the world together. The opening reception and the International Women's Day celebration on March 12th attracted more than 120 Washingtonians. Not only micro-funds were generated for the Friends of Orphans, but also artists, arts lovers, social marketing and international development specialists met to enjoy the Mediterrenean food sponsored by the American Turkish Association of Washington DC, and to engage with the panelists' presentation, followed by an inspiring discussion.Panelists Paula Howie of Former President of American Art Therapy Association & Associate Professorial Lecturer at George Washington University; Yildiz Yagci, President and CEO of Anatolian Artisans, Deborah Riley, Director of Dance Place, and Joy Ford Austin, Executive Director of Humanities Council of Washington DC discussed the intersections between artistic/cultural development and issues of urban poverty, race and gender.

During the event attendees were able to purchase artisan products from Turkey at very reasonable prices that are currently on sale in the Textile Museum and Smithsonian’s Freer/Sackler Museum gift stores. The proceeds from sales benefited low-income women artisans in Turkey.The event was also co-sponsored by Equals Three Communications, Inc.

On September 13th, 2008 up to 70 individuals including 40 Girl Scouts attended an all day arts event at the Sewall Belmont House and Museum, the headquarters of the historic National Woman's Party and the Washington home of its founder and Equal Rights Amendment author Alice Paul. The event was part of the Project 3: Empowered by Artistry Open House initiative. Project 3 consists of a collaboration of three arts organizations dedicated to social justice issues, making a difference, both locally and globally, through individual creativity and fine arts.

Arts for Global Development, one of the educational arts organizations of Project 3 facilitated the TreasurePostcards™ workshop to teach kids making artworks in the size of 4 x 6 inches. The purpose of the workshop was to help girls explore the creative process of making TreasurePostcards, depict thoughts and emotions, and generate works that emphasize personal dimension to local and global issues. These artworks encourage others to share their experiences, send a message of hope and inspiration to underprivileged children -to let them know that they are not alone. Project 3: Empowered by Artistry Exhibit Opening Reception, June 18, 2008 (Opening Event Flyer )

Close to 200 people joined Arts for Global Development and friends during the Project 3: Empowered by Artistry reception that was held at the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum. Project 3 is a collaboration of Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF), ThickArt Collaborative/Authentic Arts Consulting, and Arts for Global Development dedicated to social justice issues, making a difference, both locally and globally, through individual creativity and fine arts. TreasurePostcards'08 focuses on women's issues and the presentation/panel at artomatic highlighted some of this year's artworks, artists and their stories in a slideshow. The panel session gave an opportunity for local female artists to talk about their experiences and creative social efforts.Panel participants met with artists Helina Metaferia, Holly Stone, Patricia Correa, Patricia Ortman, and Sally Tsou. This session was moderated by Nil Sismanyazici-Navaie, Founding Director of Arts for Global Development. TreasurePostcards by Arts for Global Development, Inc. is an international project that brings emerging and professional artists from across the globe together to visually express social and economic issues with postcard-sized artworks. It is an educational/informative medium that not only helps artists gain visibility through their individual works and shares their creative ambitions, but primarily creates awareness on social and economic issues, provokes thoughts, inspires, and helps raise micro-funds for efforts making a positive difference in communities.

100% of the TreasurePostcards sales proceeds benefit Friends of Orphans that works to rehabilitate, empower, and reintegrate former child soldiers, abductees, child mothers, and orphans in Northern Uganda. Print/photo-based limited edition TreasurePostcards are only $15 and non-print artworks' base price is $30.To purchase a TreasurePostcard online please view the available artworks in the catalogue (PDF document + 2009 additional artworks) and then email the artists' name, and the title of the artwork to tpp[at]art4development.net.

To celebrate the International Women’s Day and give voice to girls and women’s issues, 88 female artists from around the world donated their artworks for the TreasurePostcards Project that has helped generate thus far micro-funds for shelters in the US and Turkey, and organizations working in Sierra Leone and Uganda. The postcard-sized artworks are in numerous arts styles, and represent varied techniques of prints, textiles, photographs, acrylics, oil paints, graphite, collage, mixed-media, and others. Themes highlighted in the works range from civil rights, to sexual violence, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, importance of literacy, economic empowerment, and more.
